Oak Hill High School senior Grant Cates was honored as the Boys Swimming & Diving Athlete of the Year at the Indiana High School Sports Awards on Sunday night, following a record-breaking season that culminated in a historic state championship performance. Cates made headlines in March when he shattered the longest-standing record in IHSAA history, scoring 655.95 points in the one-meter diving event at the state finals. This surpassed the previous record of 623.90 set in 2001 by Hamilton Southeastern’s Phillip Jones . His journey to the top was marked by steady progress: from a fifth-place finish as a freshman, to consecutive third-place finishes in his sophomore and junior years, culminating in a dominant senior season. Cates consistently improved his scores, breaking the 600-point barrier just before sectionals and never dipping below it thereafter. He clinched victories at both the Hamilton Southeastern Sectional and the Fishers Diving Regional, with scores of 641.70 and 614.15, respectively . A Southern Methodist University recruit, Cates' exceptional performance and dedication have earned him this prestigious recognition, solidifying his legacy in Indiana high school diving.
